i hope we get an all-star assistant coaching staff, but it seems weird that we're more excited about the assistants than the new head coach.

i definitely like the Matta part. only part i like. i'm just saying if Woodson is so great, why is Matta there? would Matta ave been hired if we had an experienced college coach?

i like the Matta part a lot, but it does seem a little weird that e is needed if Woodson is so great. i don't think Matta would have been needed for Beard, Musselman, Oats, Drew, Altman, etc. also, Penny is a bad example. he is a terrible coach and already got in trouble for breaking the rules. still want to see Howard down the road. he has Martelli and inherited a great situation.

dang Scott! this is the same stuff you were saying when people turned on Archie, then you became the most vocal against him of everyone! we are members of a message board. we are not going to be able to help the IU bball program regardless of whether we are positive or negative. Mike Woodson is gonna have to do that without our help.

i'm trying not to keep posting negatives right now, but how about if he's the right guy, why does he need Matta? or the question of would any other high profile program have considered him for their coaching vacancy? but just because he's an IU guy, he is the right hire?

so because we are fans, we should just agree with everything that our program does and support everyone no matter what the results are and never question anything? what about when you turned on Archie after arguing with me non stop bout how i should support him?

where is the connection to WWW? i would think that would help a lot. just makes me feel dirty talking about him though.

okay, so i agree that i there is any way to instill that, it would be huge! i really am asking how that works though. is it alum coming in and giving IU bball history lessons?

not trying to pick at you here, but asking a serious question...how do they show them what it takes to be great at IU and what it takes to win here? telling old stories? i'm just curious. i agree for sure that it is good to have alumni around and supportive, but not sure it is going to change our current players.

dead serious - i love hearing all this optimism. i am unable to watch right now, but i love hearing how many of you think this is great. i really do. gives me a little more hope i'm wrong and hope that things are looking up. sure would be awesome! i am hoping to hear a few guys that i generally respect and agree with chime in though...

i don't agree when people say anyone not named Stevens would be disappointing. i would not have been disappointed with Beard, Musselman, Altman, Drew (kind of), Oats, Matta, or Beilein. i also don't get why we would hire a guy just to make former players happy if he is not the best candidate and not an experienced college coach. again, that said, i'll hope for the best!

so, i don't think i qualify as a troll because i have been an IU fan since i knew what sports were and always back them and have been on this board since the original. i may be a loser because, yes, i would be excited about the other "old guys" because they have a lot of success at the college level. i also can't understand why we need to get rid of people who do not like the hire? we need different viewpoints. now, if anyone who doesn't like the hire is cheering for us to fail, that is waaaaaaaay different. that is definitely not me.

absolutely agree. i will be cheering for him and the team! if we win, i'll be 100% happy and thrilled to be wrong!

i'm just trying to figure out if Dolson did this solely to make the former IU players happy? did we strike out on that many other candidates? does he really think Woodson is the guy? just wondering what the real reason behind this is. i love Matta coming on, but if this is the best we could do, and we can get Matta in this role, why not Lewis or Fife? i guess we should start talking about the buyout?

I guess this is pretty much what I was going to say. I'll add to it that I honestly don't understand the theory that Woodson, Fife, Lewis, Alford, or Cheaney are going to be able to bring that back. Kids these days don't have any interest in those guys. Plus, how do they bring it back exactly? I have used this example a lot, but is it by telling them stories of the good old days? Cheaney, Woodson, Fife and Lewis didn't experience championships. They can talk about Coach Knight? Do kids care about that? Serious question - how do you bring the culture back? Does it really help to have an IU guy?

that's good math. they are in the top 68. they are better than a lot of teams. you are a bball wizard.

good point though. they're better than a couple hundred D1 schools easily.
