Not sure why you're isolating this Pistons team though? Woodson wasn't even a head coach at that point.

He was an NBA head coach as recently as 2013-14 and an assistant as recently as 2020-21.

It's not like he hasn't coached in the modern NBA, and in the modern NBA you can't play defense with that overhelping.

With all of that said, I think the point still applies to his Pistons days as well. The shooting and passing in the NBA has always been too good for that.

I’m just baffled on why he wouldn’t bring the NBA defense to college? Where and why does he have this philosophy it’s maddening to watch.

My opinion is that it's all tied to the overhelping. You see in that clip the overhelping has us constantly out of position, resulting in flying by shooters and pump fakes, which causes even more scrambling and helping.

All of that results in giving up open shots, driving lanes and ultimately offensive rebounds.

It’s brutal!! I’m so sick of watching it…

  3. Finally a more modern style of basketball…so much more tight DHO’s, zoom action, PNR, Pin downs…we didn’t throw it in post every possession like it was 1975…shoot a good amount of 3’s…there wasn’t always someone sitting on the block taking away driving lanes to the rim…if Malik can continue to make 3’s and play outside it doesn’t make him and ware playing together as bad…much better Spacing..defense continues to be lacking…just continue to over help way to often with sloppy rotations and bad close outs…haven’t had a good D since first year under Woodson..have only held one team under 60 this year..majority have been 70+

  4. He is killing it…he couldn’t have landed in a better fit…surrounded by the greatest shooters ever and one the greatest point guards ever in Chris Paul…they need a lob threat and rim perfection…a match made in heaven…not sure he be this good let’s say in Detroit..fit matters so much

It is really hard to play PnR with two guys posting up. Where are you supposed to drive or role to when someone is on the block?

The offense works better with Walker/Mgbako at the 4 and just one of MR/KW in. I would prefer Ware getting more run over Malik, he's a much better all around player.

Me and @BGleas have been saying this from the beginning.

Dickinson has about 40 pounds on Ware. If he’s allowed to push Ware under the basket, there isn’t much he can do. Wait until you see Edey, who has about 80 pounds on Ware and can do whatever he wants inside

The thing is Ware didn’t try to box him out..he was basically standing straight up and even took a step towards the basket..it was lackadaisical in a massive moment…the whole game he battled Hunter very well but that definitely was a massive mistake with game on the line

Reading all the complaints about officiating got me curious so I went and checked out the Kansas board. Unsurprisingly they see things totally differently. It took 3 pages of their game thread to find all these gems.

    indiana getting all the calls

    That’s a terrible foul call.

I don’t understand how these aren’t offensive fouls? Shoving the forearm and extending the elbow

#1 for Indiana hasn’t set a legitimate pick all day. Every time he is setting a pick he leans his shoulder out or steps out with his elbow fully extended. He never comes to a full stop with his feet

That IU dude took a solid four steps.

    Terrible officiating

just basic officiating is too big of a task for these doofuses

Kj was fouled again...refs suck ****

No matter who you are a fan of you always see things as going against your team. Truth be told there are mistakes made both ways and they mostly even out.

I thought there were calls missed both ways…everyone complaining about the end when they said the ball wasn’t out of bounds when Ware saved it..how about freaking box out and just grab the rebound instead of letting Hunter push you basically under the rim..refs didn’t cost us the game but is an easy scape goat

It depends on who leaves from other teams but we’ll bring back a solid core and bring in some solid recruits (thinking Catchings and Harris being the two most likely to make an immediate impact). I think Smith is absolutely in the conversation for best PG in the conference. His stats are on par (and even better in some areas) than Kolek.

And you’re right that both can be true which was part of my argument that Smith’s improvement isn’t just linked to how tall/dominant Edey is.

I think losing the NPOY for basically 2 straight seasons is going to be a much bigger loss than you expect. Purdue should definitely be top 25 though next year. Smith is probably my favorite player to watch in the BIG 10

Yeah, at one point it looked like Leal got up from the bench and I thought maybe he was going in.

I personally would have gone with Gunn there, just because of his athleticism.

I just thought we needed a more perimeter oriented defender in that spot once you could tell Banks was struggling with the pin down screens.

    Your 100 percent spot on

We can agree to disagree. Does Edey help make players better? Obviously the NPOY will do that. But if you see Smith play without Edey, it’s clear he’s a stud.

We’ll be a top 10 team next year without Edey IMO. Its still a really talented squad even without Edey.

Top 10 is a stretch…top 25 sure…love smith wished IU would offered..maybe the best guard in conference…in the nation? No…Edey helps tremendously and Smith has also really improved..both can be true..

We are who we are in terms of roster construction. Seems apparent we got a lot of guys playing certain positions but have the skill sets better suited for others. That said, I do think we have talent and can win games as long as we do the following:

-Shorten the bench and stop the mass subbing. No more than 2 starters out at a time. If a guy like Edey can play 35+ minutes a game, so can Ware and Reneau.

-Play Sparks only if there are foul trouble concerns. He and Reneau have similar styles of play and Malik is better in all aspects. Plus Sparks can’t hit FT’s so half his shots are essentially turnovers.

-Give Mac and Banks a chance to be a stretch 4 if the other team decides to pack the paint.

-Emphasize to Ware and Reneau they need to be more willing passers. It’s great they can finish through contact but I’d like to see us take those wide open perimeter shots when they are being doubled/tripled. I would hope Mac/Gallo/Gunn/Cupps can shoot when they have time and space.

-When we’re down by 6+ points, we need to get into our sets MUCH quicker and have a sense of urgency when we’re playing from behind.

-Dominate the glass. More teams miss than they make. If we don’t have shooters, we need to get additional possessions and make the most of transition opportunities.
