This is absolutely not a "fire Woodson" post. I've largely been pleased with Woodson, but I also think there are some real concerns at this point.

One thing that has really been puzzling to me is that when he got here he was all but taking credit for the move to high-volume 3pt shooting in the NBA.

He was claiming his Hawks teams were the first ones to do this.

But now, he is very defensive and dismissive when the media asks about our inside focused, low-volume 3pt shooting offense. He's kind of changed his tune there.

Part of that is tailoring his system to his roster, which I'm a big fan of. But then the question needs to be asked, "why in year 3 do we still have such a poorly constructed roster with no guards or wings that can create anything or reliably hut any shot outside the paint?

From an offensive system perspective and roster construction perspective, while more talented, it's sort of like Archie year 7.

    It's all just really puzzling.

We are 7-2 but there are RED flags everywhere! Scheme, style of play, and roster construction make it hard to get excited about the direction of the program.

I'm not expecting great things tonight, especially if we don't have XJ. Mainly just because it's our first true road game and our first Big Ten road game.

It's crazy hard to win on the road, as we saw across the country and in the Big Ten last weekend.

Regardless of how Michigan has played of late, it's a tall task.

I’m not surprised by the line…we match up really well against Maryland because they basically play 3 bigs like us..with Michigan more perimeter oriented and a good shooting team 7.5 seems about right.

McCord was the worst starting OSU qb in recent memory. Any of their qb's of the past 15-20 years probably wins a national title with this team.

Yup they had everything except the QB this year…still just about got it done…if Stroud or Fields is on this team they are national champs

There’s not really an argument for OSU. OSU would be favored by 8 or 9 points and PSU would be favored by probably the same as Texas on a neutral field. OSU would be favored vs everyone in the playoffs except Michigan, same with Georgia. Georgia might even be slight favorites vs Michigan. None of that should matter though or there’s no point in playing the games.

I respectfully disagree with that…If I was betting I’d take Texas over Ohio and I’d take Washington over Penn state

They haven’t won a game by more than 10 points since 9/23 against Cal. That includes single digit wins against bad Stanford, Arizona State, and Washington State teams. There are at least 10 teams that are “better” than Washington, including all 3 of the top Big Ten teams.

You can make a legit argument Ohio state is better not so sure about Penn state

But I could argue FSU still beat a top 15 UL team with their third QB and the #2 will be back for the bowl game.  The game the 2 played was still a win over an SEC team even if it was ugly…like Bama’s win over Auburn.

But none of this matters anymore either.

I understand your point but with the original back up QB they have taken a clear step backwards

I don’t think Washington has a great shot of winning either. They’re pretty clearly a step below the other teams imo, and had a lot of close games that went their way. But they deserve a shot because they went undefeated, same as FSU. If we’re saying the 4 best teams deserve to be in, I think Ohio State should clearly be in over Washington. I also don’t think Alabama or Texas are one of the 4 “best” teams either, but those are a bit closer.

You have a legit argument there about Washington but dang they looked impressive against Oregon. They are running the ball so much better with Johnson now and the defense is playing better…I’d give them a better shot at winning them Florida state because they still have Penix now if he was hurt and the backup QB was awful I’d say the same thing I’m saying about Florida State

If we’re doing “best teams” regardless of results, Washington, Texas, and Alabama shouldn’t be in. SP+ has Michigan #1, Georgia #2, Ohio State #3, and Penn State #4. FPI has Michigan #1, Ohio State #2, Penn State #3, and Oregon #4. Washington in particular isn’t top 10 in either metric, and is most certainly not one of the 4 best teams.

Metrics are good but they only tell you so much…it’s important to use them with other variables as well…there are 6-7 teams that legit could win it all this year..unfortunately for Florida state I don’t believe they were one of them without Jordan Travis and I think that’s been pretty clear the last two games they played have been UGLY…no way they win a game against any of those other teams

So the move for Florida St should have been instead of winning all their games, instead of scheduling 2 non conference games vs P5 schools and winning....what they should have done is say Jordan Travis is hurt but will be back by January 1st? Joking aside.

If Jordan Travis injury wasn’t season ending and he legitimately was coming back you put then in…the are undoubtedly one the top 4 teams with him…QB is the most important position in all of sports…it sucks for Florida state but it’s reality..there are 6-7 teams that’s can win it all this year as well..fortunately and unfortunately the 12 teams playoff starts next year

  10. I thought the committee got it right…no way FSU is beating anybody in the top 7 with that QB…I hate it for em but that’s reality..now if their back up looked serviceable then ya include them but they look horrible on offense…and their strength of schedule is in the 50’s…i thought Ohio state was more deserving than them considering they lost 1 game on the ROAD to the number 1 team in nation…and I would put Georgia in over them as well…if they matched up against any of those teams they would be 10-15 point underdogs. Its about getting the BEST teams in

I really like Cignetti in particular.  All he does is win, which means he knows how to run an entire operation and all phases.  His record reminds me of Kalen DeBoer.  He just knows how to win.  Plus there’s an edginess and a “won’t back down” attitude.  I wish we were hearing more about a connection there.

Candle has a lot going for him too.  Little more risk for a variety of reasons.  He’s been successful but if you look at all circumstances I like Cignetti well above Candle (famous last words that someone may quote back to me in 2029!).

Forgot all about him! He be good

Yes, my contention after watching 2+ years of our defense is that over helping and collapsing too much is the scheme.

Do I think the players execute well? No, and that obviously makes the issues worse.

I think in general, our team schematically tries to play basketball more similarly to how it was played 20 years ago than the most optimal way to play it today. Doesn't mean you can't win and be successful, but it does mean you're making it harder on yourself and every mistake on the players is magnified because they aren't in the most optimal position to begin with.

    Exactly

I didn't see the interview but did see some of Woodson's quotes on this on X/Twitter. Sharing that because I understand just reading the quotes doesn't give the full context.

With that said, I think it's both a scheme and execution issue and I think the scheme leads to a lot of the execution/communication issues.

I've not watched nearly the film that our staff has, not even close. But the clips I've seen addressing this on X/Twitter and watching the games, it seems crystal clear to me that our scheme is built to over-help, often very unnecessarily.

IMO, the overhelping is really bad at times and it is often the reason for the execution and communication mistakes.

The overhelping often puts guys in positions where they're unnecessarily scrambling to recover and in those situations you open yourself up to help/recover mistakes, miscommunication and other issues.

IMO, it's kind of like the chicken and the egg.

Scheme is leading to more stress on communicating/execution because we are constantly in rotation

Whats your thoughts on why Leal doesn’t get playing time even in scrap minutes? I for one, would rather play Leal over Walker.

Have no idea why we don’t play Leal over Walker..Walker is a worse version of Banks. Leal provides shooting we desperately need
