The over-helping is my biggest concern. Been an issue for 3 years, and it leaves guys out of position and the defense scrambling which contributes to both open 3's and then also being out of position for defensive rebounding (another issue, but there connected a bit).

What I've never understood is that Woodson had 40 years of NBA coaching experience. If you over-help and leave the perimeter open like this in the NBA, you'll be down 20 in the first quarter.

Some of the lineups are head scratchers as well

I still believe that IU won't be at it's best offensively until Mgbako is playing the 4 with Cupps, X, Trey, and Ware. Reneau could also be the 5 in place of Ware as well. I just think that combination needs to be together at different parts of the game.

That combination has to be together and we haven’t seen a single minutes of it yet…frustrating

It has nothing to do with the stars, you know that. It's about style of play. Ware is an NBA-talent center. He's better than Reneau at this point.

The rest is about style of play. We don't play fast enough. We don't take remotely enough 3's. We don't get to lane/basket enough because always have 2 bigs in there.

Mgbako hasn't been good. Nobody has said he has. But the coaches haven't done a single thing so far to utilize his talent.

Mgbako is an elite shooter and his skillset is better suited as a "college 4". We need shooting and we need to shoot more 3's, but our style of play and lineup rotations are not conducive to that.

How about we try to get our best shooter involved a little bit? It doesn't mean Reneau won't play or won't get opportunities.

Perfectly stated…the positive is a lot of this is fixable the negative is I’m not sure Woodson will do it or knows how to

I still don't see that UM gained that big of an advantage. Or really any advantage, and there are other teams doing shit very similar.

Hard for me to care about this.

Ya kinda in same boat. And I highly doubt it something other teams aren’t doing. I think a lot of other BIG teams are just sick of getting waxed by Michigan so they want Harbaugh gone

I really want to see a Cupps, XJ, Galloway, Mgbako, Ware lineup at times.

Crazy defensive pressure up top, Ware defending the rim, and you can sort of 'hide' Mgbako defensively until he figures that out. You would need to team rebound though.

Offensively, geez you have 3 guards and a shooter, and you just have Ware setting high ball screens and popping or diving to the rim.

The spacing that would create would be crazy. You'd get our guards in the lane and creating a ton of offense for us, we could play fast and get MM transition 3's etc.  XJ has also seemed best the last few years in the high ball screen action.

Not saying that necessarily should he the starting lineup, but I'd give it some serious time in games to see how it works.

That lineup would be nasty! Have yet to see it though

I mean we shot 4/13. Not great, but good enough to shoot more than we did.  There are also systems (and messages from coaches) that inspire confidence in shooting and systems that don’t.

Our Coach deprioritizes shooting from three. He’s said so himself, and I think that could end up being a problem.

    Agreed

I think it’s because when Woody finally went to the 3 guards in the 2nd half that lineup was working and Woody didn’t want to change anything.

The entire first half the lineups were head scratchers. We had Banks and Walker in at the same time??? What are we doing? And the over helping has to stop! It took Penn State hitting 19 3’s last year to figure that out. Stick with shooters you have a 7’2 guy to block shots and help at the rim. Just ridiculous poor at times on defense.

Just one game, but Gunn and Banks did not show the improvement people were looking for.

To be fair I don’t think the lineups they were with out there was beneficial to them…head scratching on the lineups until the end…at one point we had Walker and Banks on the floor at one time???

I think MM will be better at the 4 against some teams. I want to see a lineup of Cupps, X, Trey, Mgbako, and Ware just to see what it looks like.

It’s our best lineup in my opinion…Mack can bring the other teams 4 out on the perimeter then look at all the space the guards have to play with. I don’t understand how we didn’t see a single minute of that lineup.

More praise for CJ Gunn defensively and then an example of our over-helping (been an issue the last couple of years) which results in an open 3.

Looking forward to paying closer attention to Gunn on the defensive end Tuesday after watching these clips.

The over helping is my biggest complaint under Woodson! Drives me nuts. Otherwise he’s pretty good.

Agree! Said this in the game thread, but I'd really like to see Mgbako more involved in fhe offense.

Right now he's basically in Kopp's old stand in the corner and wait role. He's too good of a scorer and shooter for that.

Have to get him post ups in mid range

Definitely not a super encouraging performance. This team has a long way to go, but the good news is that this is exhibition game 1, they have time to improve.

If we played Kansas this week, I think we'd get smashed.

With that said, there were some good things too. I thought our best six or so guys we're (in no particular order) XJ, Galloway, Mgbako, Reneau, Cupps and Walker.

I'm really surprised some were impressed with Gunn. I thought he was just a more confident version of last season. He's high volume and low efficiency, while also getting lost defensively A LOT.

Ware finished with good numbers but I generally wasn't super impressed. He got pushed around a lot and he's not nearly as athletic as I thought. He's incredibly long, but lacks quick twitch athleticism which I thought makes him play smaller than he is.

I thought Cupps was fantastic, this kid is going to play, and may end up in our finishing lineup if he can hit shots too. I also thought Walker was really good.

I'm with @5fouls in that i'm just really concerned that we once again barely took any 3's.

This has been talked about the last few years a tad, but not as much as it probably should have because TJD convered up so much, but our bigs are really, really bad at recognizing open shooters from the block.

I know Reneau is really strong on the block, has great touch, etc., but it's a different game in 2023 and there were numerous times he had kickouts to wide open shooters but passed them up. Reneau wasn't the only one. But we need a mentality to be a higher volume 3pt shooting team.

Finally, I thought there were some really good things defensively, especially XJ and Cupps, but definitely concerned about Reneau, Gunn, Mgbako and Ware (when he's not blocking shots) on that end.

Last thing, our bigs won't like it, but I really think this team needs to go smaller as opposed to the two true bigs lineup. Not saying he has to be the guy, but I felt like our best runs came with more athleticism at the 4 with Walker.

More 3’s and go smaller! Love it

IU needs continuity…I’d prefer an offensive minded head coach that even if we lose some assistants can still keep things headed in the right direction. Obviously not an Andy Reid but you catch my drift. Lots of assistant coaches under him but the genius stays in the building even if the assistants get promoted elsewhere (which is what you want).

Which has always been the problem and why it would be great for Allen to work out. Who is going to stay at IU as HC after success when the big boys come calling…basically nobody unless they have ties to the state like Allen

Through the week they've never had games on CBS, right?

    Fox for sure.

But, this will literally force people to get Peacock. Kind of lame, I get it for free, not sure I understand the point of it.

It should definitely be on a national stage and network like Duke-UNC…shame IU misses out on on a chance to promote the school with a great environment on national stage…I’m ticked

I know it was trash time but Sorsby was throwing the ball with a lot more accuracy. Tayven misses so many open throws. I was hoping to see that improve over time; like in the 2nd half of the Louisville game TJ seemed dialed in but the inconsistency has continued since then.

I was never going to say anything but I thought Sorsby was better this whole time…he’s a littler quicker and more accurate. I thought it wasn’t fair to him that TJ got to start against ISU…I mean I could of looked good against them…he didn’t really earn to start because ISU is AWFUL it basically proves nothing playing against them…I think the name and the 4 star recruit got him the starting spot. He has talent clearly and it is close but I liked Sorsby a little better. Not that it will make much of difference with this staff
