  1. So I had things going on last night and had to record the game.  I haven't been able to watch it yet but have two thoughts:

    1. Nice to get back in the W column and more importantly,

    2.  I saw that Leal had a really good game and I could not be happier for that guy.  He has done nothing but come in and do what he has been asked for 4 years.  Glad to see him get an opportunity after all that hard work and also glad to see that the opportunity was taken advantage of.  I hope the kid goes on a tear to end the year.  He represents what I used to love about college athletics that we really don't get much of a chance to see anymore.

Seems as though Rocky Top is in some trouble with the NCAA over their NIL.  How many other schools are they gonna go after?

That cat is out of the bag.  The schools aren't even technically supposed to have any hand in the NIL stuff so what are they hitting them for?  You aren't allowed to introduce them to these collectives?

    Too little, too late.

Maybe take the Cignetti approach. Who cares what they are rated. Get guys in the portal that play during the crucial minutes in a game and demonstrate the ability to execute the role you need to fill. If those guys are ranked high, great. If those guys aren’t ranked high, but you believe in them, also great.

But I think the challenge for any staff is being confident enough in your system to clearly define the roles that need to be filled, and then identifying those guys to fill them.

Purdue and Wisconsin know what they need, it’s why they have been successful. I think Woody is still trying to figure out his system and the personnel he needs to make it work. It looks to me like there has been a lot of trial and error going on these last 2.5 years.

This is not so much a criticism of CMW, but an example of an inexperienced college coach trying to figure out what schemes work in CBB and the caliber of athlete he needs in terms of athleticism, fundamentals, basketball IQ, etc.

Thus, he’s not only trying to figure out which pegs fit in the holes, he’s still trying to figure out what shape the holes need to be.

Our issues are two-fold when it comes to personnel.

All of that reads to me like a big WTH were they thinking hiring a 62 year old coach for his first college coaching gig.  Like those should have been interview type of questions.

To me you hire a 62 year old NBA guy to win now, not learn on the job.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm seeing a new "toughness" out of Mgbako along with the growth in his game (moderate at the defensive end)...Hummel even said he sees the improvement right after Mac hit the 3 to tie it at 62...

Another thing Hummel said during the Wisconsin game...That Purdue and Wisconsin were successful Big 10 programs because they had stability. Between Painter 19 years) and Ryan/Gard (22 years)...IU has had 6 coaches...And Hummel added he didn't know what IU fans really expect changing coaches as we have...

I get this is an agenda driven thread, and I even have a good idea why it started...But I think if you even want IU to be great again, you have to be behind some program stability...

If that is the case you don't go out and hire a 62 year old coach....

The usual suspects making the usual arguments.

I always go back to before the year. Why were our expectations high? 80% roster turnover right?

Maybe because our staff had players in the right position last year and they executed? You can't say expectations were high and subsequently say they are below the bar without admitting the staff exceeded things last year.

The 3-4 musketeers can't have it both ways.

In terms of game. Was courtside. The charge on X was total BS. Let the one bald dude know...and almost got tossed.

Good luck to the board gang. I've shared my thoughts with a few. This is Peegs now....and such a shame.

I don't know about "high" expectations.  I think the expectation has been to make the tournament and finish in top half of Big Ten.  That isn't high to me.

Why did people feel that way?  Well, we had a combined 10 years of experience in the back court and 3 5* players in the front court.  Honestly, if anything, our expectations were a little muted given we had an idea that our 10 years of experience could be streaky but the team failed to meet even those muted expectations.  I don't think there is a team in the BIG doing less with more than Indiana.  One 5* guy for some of the teams above us would be considered an abundance of riches.  We start 3.

Actually I thought today the tone of this board has been pretty subdued today co.pared to other losses

Because the year is already over so the losses don't matter and we all know Woodson is going to be here again next year.  This game in the past would have made me mad, now it is like "whatever".  Winning would have been the surprise.

The narrative of the board was that we would not compete today.

There were multiple posters that thought we would get beat by more than the spread that the betting books had.

Yeah, we lost. Yeah, making the tournament looks like a long shot.

I thought that this team showed a lot of fight today.. Not perfect by a long shot, but definitely they could hold their heads high for the effort they gave. Especially since our best player was not on the floor.

It is so easy to pile on and beat down these guys and the coaches. It’s so easy to join the crowd.

Would love if this forum might try to get behind these guys.

I don't think I can celebrate this moral victory.

XJ got a technical foul btw, ILL will shoot 2 FTs to start 2H

    That's bull sh**.

Woodson needs to stand up for his guys better than he does.  Dudes flip the ball back to the guy out of bounds all the time and Hawkins is a whiny b*tch every time we play them.

I’d say Izzo has earned a little leeway.  Per Wiki…

Izzo has led the Spartans to eight Final Fours in the NCAA Tournament, which include the NCAA National Championship in 2000 and a Runner-Up finish in 2009. His teams have won ten Big Ten regular season titlesand six Big Ten tournament titles in his 28 years at Michigan State. Izzo has the most wins in school history and has appeared in 25 consecutive NCAA tournaments, the longest streak of tournament appearances all-time in men's college basketball. He has never had a losing season as a head coach.[4] In addition, MSU set the Big Ten record for the longest home court winning streak between 1998 and 2002. Several of these accomplishments led former ESPN analyst Andy Katz to deem Michigan State the top college basketball program for the decade of 1998 to 2007.[5]

Izzo is currently the longest-tenured coach in the Big Ten Conferenceand his teams are often recognized for their rebounding prowess and defensive tenacity. He has won four national coach of the year awards and maintains a considerable coaching tree—several of his former assistants are currently head coaches at other Division I schools. Izzo has won 10 regular-season conference titles, the third most in conference history. He has also won the most Big Ten tourney titles (six) in conference history.

On March 6, 2022, Izzo surpassed Bob Knight for the most wins by a men's basketball coach at a Big Ten school with 663.

He is following a less accomplished path parallel to Coach Knight.  I think at a certain point that some of these guys reach a certain age and still want to compete but they don't want or like dealing with kissing 18-22 year old butt as much as they have to.  It becomes harder and harder to connect.

That article also left out that Watford and Elston disagreed with evans that the program has hit its ceiling with Woody, but they didn’t want to question evans because of the player he was.

I think it has hit the ceiling with this iteration of Woodson's plan.  He needs to change things up, if he can do that then there is potentially room for more.

Maybe Sisley isn't what Woodson is looking for. He's pretty skinny for a "big"

He needs to eat some food.

Yeah, what do Izzo and Painter know about winning in the Big Ten....

Sisley is the type of kid who if he goes to another Big Ten school will absolutely steal our lunch and we'll sit back and wonder how the f that guy got away.

Do you have first hand knowledge that this is the case?

I have to ask because just a couple of posts above yours, Thad Matta is quoted as saying he has a lit of respect for Coach Woodson.

We all watch the games, so we have some perspective to form an opinion on his coaching style and results.  However, I certainly have no inside knowledge on whether Woodson or the assistants 'sit on their asphalt' or not.

I do recall, at least early on in his tenure, there were several posts that indicated Woodson was at the athletic facilities much more frequently than Archie.  That at least implies a good work ethic.

I am strictly talking recruiting.  The two assistants, when was the last time we landed anybody they were the lead recruiters on.  In Woodson's case it is reading tea leaves like the recent interview with Sisley where he indicated Painter and Izzo had been seeing him regularly and Woodson just recently started to get more involved while Walsh had been the main contact.  Walsh was the main guy on our so far only 2024 recruit.  He was the main guy on Cupps.  Newton may be the only guy we targeted that he didn't pull in out of the last few high school classes. (Mgbako's Mom recruited him)

In a results based business, Rosemond and Hunter in particular don't appear to be adding much value.  They reportedly are here to mostly recruit and going into January 2024 with at least a 4 man class coming up and an unused scholarship from last year and only having 1 spot filled looks pretty garbage to me.

Yeah, unfortunately if this is another double digit loss then the season is effectively over unless everyone's  excited about whether IU can play its way into the NIT. That's barring a miracle run through the BTT.

I prepared for that eventuality a few games ago.  The season is effectively over for anything we care about from a post season or accomplishment perspective.  Only thing team is likely playing for at this point is pride and that isn't the type of thing I think is going to move the needle much.

It does seem that way. It also seems like statements like the one below from that same article reinforce what was being said.

“Coach Izzo and some assistants came down, and coach Painter came down for a home game. Both of them have been down this year to see me.”

Walsh does all the recruiting work.  The other 3 (Woodson, Hunter, Rosemond) sit on their *** and collect a check.  I would keep Walsh if I were the next coach.  Hunter and Rosemond would get fired at the press conference.

Who would want to play at a program with 40+ years of coaching consistency.

Playing & graduating with your 4-5 year teammates

Knowing when you go back with your kids you are part of that family with the next couch PJ?  Grady?  Sasha?

Maybe Sisley is waiting to feel that love & family atmosphere from CMW ?

I still think he is IU’s to lose….but it’s starting to feel like TKR 2.0

    F--- Purdue.
