I get that sentiment and you're probably right.

But wasnt Alford NPOY his SR and VO was top 3. I mean, hard to really know how good a team is when you add in a NPOY, right?

I mean, sweet jesus VO and XJ would be a Buckner/Wilkerson combo defensively. And I think its glaringly obvious what Alford would do for us offensively.

Obviously, either would completely change our game.... but I personally do not think many bubble teams are only one elite (college level) player away from a title.

Compare to the 2012-2013 team, aside from Yogi (FR) vs. XJ (SR) I am not sure I would take anyone from this team over their comparator from that team: Hulls > Steward, VO > Kopp, Wat maybe wash with Thompson (ironically, I think Thompson would have been a better fit on the '12-'13 team and Wat's 3 point shooting would help this team more) and (as much as I LOVE TJD) Zeller > TJD. Even Sheehy (JR) was better than Galloway (SO) - albeit I think Galloway's trajectory (i.e., improving shot) makes his long-term ceiling MUCH higher)

PS: This is not a knock on this team, I LOVE THEM and believe they will find a way into at least the sweet 16.

What one player from 5fouls' list of teams -- outside of this year's -- would you add to this year's roster? And could this (or any???) player elevate this team to a national title?

Has to be Alford or VO right?

So weak on the wing. Watford would be a huge addition, but Race is still very solid.

If you grabbed VO or Alford.. They're replacing Kopp or Stewart. huge difference

Same two I would have looked at... Watford could shoot it as well.

Response to the second question: NO - unless it is an NBA player in their prime (maybe Lebron or Curry... and even then)

Race has to continue to be confident in his stroke to space the floor...

Honestly, I wish Coach Woodson would force TJD to shoot a few more jumpers as well (maybe not 3 pointers). I think he can hit them as well, you just needs a few to go through the hoop in a game.

The fact is we are not going very far if we have two 6-8/9 guys camped out all game two feet from the basket. Too easy to defend.

PLUS: RACE HAS EARNED THE RIGHT TO SHOOT A FEW THREES A GAME.

TJD and Zeller both can't be in the starting lineup.  They are both listed at the '5'.  And, with the 2 player limit, you can't have Dipo, Zeller, Watford, and Yogi all on the roster.

I didn't choose '92-'93 because I wanted to have a little more recency with the '12-'13 team.  The overall exercise was to integrate someone from this team year's team onto a Championship caliber roster.

Honestly, TJD would be easy to fit on a championship caliber roster. If he was not the only focal point of an offense, he would be amazing.

  5. I never saw (nor heard on the radio) the '75-'76 team nor the '80-'81 team and only listened to the '86-'87 team on the radio... so certainly recency bias:

    1. IT
    2. Alford
    3. Dipo
    4. May (corrected from TJD per rules that I did not read 😆)
    5. TJD (I do not know the other centers well and want 'Dipo in the starting five over Zeller)
    • Yogi
    • Zeller (had to cut Watford)
    • Thompson - need guys like him

    Why no '92-'93?!?!

#1 is out. He's played in games so a regular redshirt can't happen but he's also played in games after the cutoff point in the season (1st 1/2) where he would be eligible for a medical redshirt if he's injured.

So it's either #2  or possibly a #3 you didn't mention: he could be injured. Probably #2.

OR a #4: he is still in the dog house

So it was curfew and not drug related according to Rabby.

Some person on the Assembly Call postgame chat mob said it was related to something they were doing on a video on instagram the night before that has since been removed. I have no idea if it is reliable.

The fact is this will set the tone and establish which types of recruit who consider us.

I don't disagree, but I'd then go on to say that all rivalries are regional in basketball except for the one ESPN forces upon us.

Even in football, it's pretty regional. You ask someone in Ohio, and OSU/UM is the biggest rivalry in CFB. Ask someone in the south? It's the Iron Bowl.

I am pretty sure everyone agrees that the biggest football rivalry is Rutgers/Maryland 😉

I care a lot more about the candy stripes than I do about player names on jerseys.  That honestly would not bother me at all.

I will miss the nameless jersey's, but I want to win in all legal ways.

Besides, imagine if we could have bought a Calbert Cheaney in early '90s. That would be AWESOME... in fact I would not mind having a Chaney, a Watford, and a Yogi jersey. (Jury is still out on a TJD jersey)

It would make IU and the players a lot of money - there is no way this is not happening long term.

I mean, for me, the biggest thing is that I'm excited to watch IU basketball again... We're certainly closer to being "back" than I thought we would be at this point, and with a start like this in his first year, I have full confidence in CMW to get us back to contending for B1G titles in the next year or two...

This 100 times. I think it will take a couple for Coach Woodson to really build the type roster he wants. However, it is nice to not stink during the rebuild.

This team was put together with band-aids and rubber bands and even if we are not really in contention for the title, we can still have a major say in who wins or loses and maybe win a couple in the tourney. That is not bad.

Its a matter of perspective.  I grew up in Sellersburg with 90% of my family in Kentucky.

That is a massive day in Kentucky.  The fandom of those people is off the charts.  I've been Bloomington and north for over half my life now and still to this day I've not seen the fandom of IU/pu come anywhere close to UK/UofL.  Parties everywhere.  The entire week you wear your color to make it known.  Every business picks a side.  The only reason Duke and UNC is close is because of tv and success, not because of the fans within the state making it a psychotic all encompassing event.  It's the only thing they have besides derby.  Nothing else competes with college basketball in the state.  No NFL, no NBA, no split with Notre Dame fandom and the turn coats, no Indy 500, even high school basketball.  Then you have the region and Ft wayne, they might as well be Michigan or some other state, no offense but that's where most of the turns coats are unless you are actually Catholic.  In Kentucky, college basketball is the religion.

Then take the perspective of the national interest and you will see that you are giving way too much respect to Purdue, with zero national championships and zero national following.

No offense to your take but I'd rank UK UofL as the top college game of the regular season.  The only thing close is a Duke UNC game late February determining an ACC champion.  But I'm all ears if you can convince me otherwise.  Maybe viewership ratings but that's because of national interest and not boots on the ground.

FYI: I do not think that IU - PU is a bigger national rivalry than Louisville/UK. IU-PU is definitely a regional rivalry; more regional than UK-Louisville. Unless you live in Indiana or are a fan of one of the teams, nobody cares. In fact when we play UK regularly, I consider it the more important rivalry.

But from my experience, Louisville-UK is also a regional rivalry (it does not really move the needle outside the region) and more imbalanced. There may be split fans in the Louisville metropolitan area, but I have almost NEVER seen a Louisville flag anywhere that isn't in the Louisville metropolitan area. I only have impressions, but Kentucky is not a state with a divided fandom. There are split fans near Louisville an then the entire rest of the state bleeds Kentucky blue. Not as bad as UC-Ohio State fandom splits, but still pretty bad.

If regionality is not an issue and intensity is the target, I think UC - XU blows away Duke/UNC (having experienced both).  Those fans actually hate each other, it is not part of a show or something.

  12. For me the difference is this:

I feel confident that we will have a chance to win every game. The past few years after a tough loss like saturday, I would be worried about a snowball effect. We may not win at NW (they are much than their record indicates - they have lost almost every close game), but I am not worried about whether we will come to play.

  13. I understand the animosity, but he was and would still be an excellent college coach.

I love having Woodson and believe he may build something even better, but I think Stevens would have been very successful at IU. If he were to choose Louisville,  he would probably win big. He would become persona-non-grata for me if he chose Louisville after turning us down (I can accept him staying in Boston/NBA, but Louisville...) but I don't doubt what he would do on the court.

At this stage I have nothing against Stevens. I still think his explanation is misunderstood and misrepresented at times. I thought it was nice.

Regardless, my coach is on the sidelines.
