Man, it’s hard to find many negatives with Cignetti IMO. I don’t know anything about scheme or system, so maybe there’s a negative there, but everything else looks great. He’s won everywhere he’s gone, experience building up really bad IUP and Elon programs, and flawlessly transitioned JMU to d1. Being a Saban assistant and coaching Phillip Rivers at NC St is just the icing on the cake.

Even his age isn’t really a negative to me.  If anything, it makes it more likely that he sees IU as his last stop. I’d be very excited if he were the guy.

Don't know about his defense, but his offensive scheme is very similar to Mike McCarthy, the Dallas/Green Bay coach.

In regards to Gruden.... I get the concern. I get the potential backlash. I get that the President and AD would be sticking their necks out. But...

At what point does someone get another chance after having done some things a long time ago? If the university is serious about having a winning program, shouldn't the best candidate be hired. If Gruden is viewed as having the best credentials, isn't it time to take a leap of faith and give him a shot?

I am not saying that he should be the coach. I am not saying he should be automatically disqualified. I am saying that he should be given the opportunity to pursue the position, and let his coaching acumen be the determining factor.

Has he ever even apologized for it?  And I don’t know, I’m just asking.  All I’ve ever heard that he’s done is sue the NFL for exposing the filth that he wrote.

We know ARE has a lack of experience running a program. We don't know if he has a lack of skill for it or not, but given that he has never spent a single minute around a successful college program in his entire life I think it's fair to question if that skill is there.

    It’s certainly a fair question.

This is a big picture question, nothing directed at you.......but,

Whats the difference between making sure ARE has a grade A, top of the line coaching staff to make sure he is successfull that can cover up his potential warts and doing the same for FCTA??

My answer to that, just off the top of my head, is that ARE and FCTA have different warts.  ARE’s is a lack of experience running a program, while FCTA’s is a lack a skill running a program.  While I see a lot of assumptions here that lack of experience automatically means lack of skill, that is not necessarily the case.

The Boca Raton flight is interesting because that’s exactly where FAU is. Not nearby. The exact town.  On the other hand, it could be a family who spent the holiday weekend in South Florida lol.  Not unheard of for a Thanksgiving weekend.

There's also a huge donor who makes his winter home there.

I can appreciate a player standing up for his coach but the young man needs to sit this one out. IU Football and our Administration has invested plenty in facilities/upgrades/stadium improvements.....when I hear generic phrases like they need to invest in our program my question is what specifically are you talking about kid??

If there are specific things we need to do besides NIL let us know. Otherwise I feel like IU across the board has invested plenty....unless he's saying we need more $ for better assistants.

Agree.  Nobody in IU’s administration missed 100 tackles yesterday.

    I take Gary Patterson

With all due respect, this is what I don't get.  Patterson was below .500 his last 4 years at TCU, then they fire him and go to the playoffs.  Why would a guy who stopped winning at a school capable of going to the final 4 be successful at Indiana?  A lot, if not all, of these "experience" guys would be Gerry Dinardo, Part 2.

I guess you have to ask what is the most important thing when looking at a HC candidate. Do you want a person with HC experience and if we do then it will probably come from a smaller conference. Do you want someone known as a great recruiter who has been a coordinator at a high level program. If we go the experience route does he have good recruiting connections who can recruit the higher rated kids.

My hope is we leave no stone unturned and find the best possible candidate.  I understand the want for experience, but I also hope we don’t hire a guy who failed at place with more resources than we have available (for example, a Gerry Dinardo type) just for the sake of experience.

I look at Marquette at just smh. How does a program like that become top 5 with a relatively new coach and we can’t ever seem to sustain success…it’s disappointing.

I’m not sure what they’ve sustained.  Sure, they were good last year and look good this year, but they haven’t made it past the first weekend of the tournament since 2013.  They got bounced by a 7 seed last year.  If they were us, this board would be griping about how they underachieved in the tournament and wasted last season.  Probably would have started a Fire Shaka thread.  I guess time will tell if they actually sustain anything.

He was on our staff.  He had coached at Ball State previously, though.

I had forgotten about Bill Mallory, who we hired from Northern Illinois before NIU left the MAC for a while.  So, Bill Mallory and Terry Hoeppner are the two coaches, at least in modern times, that we've hired directly from the MAC.  Hmmmm.
