    Year 7 of Holtmann

Highest finish in B1G was 2nd in his 1st year. Average finish is around 6th and has never made it past the 2nd rd.

I was at the IU-Ohio State game and my thought at the end of that game was I wouldn’t be happy if I was an Ohio State fan.  Led by close to 10 points in the second half, outrebounded them 49-27, and still found a way to lose?  Pretty remarkable.

It occurred to me this morning that while not a perfect analogy, you can draw some parallels between IU basketball under Woodson and Michigan football under Harbaugh. Both starred at their schools under legendary coaches, went on to respectable professional careers, and then had some level of success coaching professionally, before returning home to try to revive their alma maters. Both had some immediate success turning things around, but didn't immediately reach their desired goals. Then things started to slip.

It took Harbaugh a few more years, and almost losing his job after a disastrous COVID year to take a long look in the mirror, but then he changed schemes, assistants, culture, etc.

I'm not sure if Woodson is at a similar point yet, but it certainly appears that things aren't going as planned, and IU is reaching a critical juncture under his leadership. Will he be willing to holistically reevaluate what's working here and what isn't, and adjust accordingly?

Three years ago today, only a fool would have thought that Michigan football would go 40-3 over the next three years and win a national championship (Connor Stallions or not). IU certainly could have the same sort of turn around under Woodson, but it'll take a lot of hard work, and some introspection.

The biggest difference is Harbaugh is younger.  So Woodson’s long look in the mirror needs to happen this morning rather than in a few years.

Might as well, our bigs get their ass handed to them on the boards every game. I dont know if its a want to thing or are they just soft lazy and weak. There is no reason ever that MM should be cherry picking a dunk while XJ is doing the rebounding. Good win with how bad we rebound and give up 2nd chance points. That needs to get fixed NOW.

It isn’t just our bigs.  Galloway is at .06 rebounds per minute and Gunn is at .05 rebounds per minute.  It would be difficult to find anybody in the country getting significant playing time any lower than that.

I agree but it is hard for X to get his shot off unless he’s wide open. He falls in love with driving and leaving his feet at the basket, leading to some WILD layup attempts. Unfortunately it’s a problem we have to live with because after 5.5 years, he aint evolving his game

He’s usually open when Malik is dribbling into triple teams.

Gotta block out. Find me a still shot of Galloway actually boxing out and I’ll buy you a drink. Only picking on him because he’s a senior but most on this team are guilty of it. This team and their complete lack of fundamentals is tough to watch

I’m at the game and none of them block out.  None of them go after loose balls.  They play in a lot of areas like their feet are glued to the floor.

X needs to shoot the ball.  He didn’t miss in warm ups.

From stuff on our board, it sounds like that’s exactly what happened. Our staff met with him before the holidays and all was good and it sounds like he was making/would’ve made a good amount with us. But he went home to Texas and it sounds like some tampering went down and now he jumps in the portal. This is the part of NIL that has to change IMO. And I’d say the same thing if a similar situation happened to one of your players. It’s out of control.

And here I was excited that we landed the top corner transfer in the portal from UGA yesterday lol. The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.

From what I’ve heard, our starting QB was fielding offers from other schools during the season.  We probably shouldn’t hold our breath waiting for anyone to do anything about it.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Woody isn’t here for the remainder of his contract, by his choice. I certainly don’t see him extending his contract.

“My clock is ticking. I want everything this year. “

‘As for the urgency of winning with a team that includes a sixth-year point guard, Woodson acknowledged the short window and stressed the importance of making the most of this opportunity.’

I figured if he signed a 6-year contract he was planning on 4-5 years, tops.

If he does get hired elsewhere, just sell him on being IU's Roy Williams.

That said, I want to see a few more seasons of sustained success before anointing him as the next Brad Stevens. He had a great season and NCAA run last year and his team looks good so far this year but can he sustain it?

Understand what you’re saying, but I also don’t think there’s anybody who has ever coached that could take a school the level of Florida Atlantic on deep tournament runs and 35 win seasons every year.  But certainly would love to see him sustain a reasonable level of success.

Really needed that signature win yesterday. MSU jumped from 79 to 45 with the Baylor win

It was the margin of that win that really helped them.  If we can win these next three games by a large margin, they will not be considered "significant" wins but it would really improve our NET ranking.

To expand upon a post I made on the Kansas post-game thread, win the next 3 then go 10-8 in the B1G here on out and you finish 20-11 (12-8) heading into the BTT. If one of those wins is Purdue, and you avoid a bad loss, that's probably firmly on the bubble. Go 11-7 in the B1G and win 2 in the BTT, and that's 23-11 (13-7) on selection day and you're in.

If you look at our remaining schedule, it isn't crazy to think they could go 14-7 from now until the BTT:

    Morehead State

    North Alabama

    Kennesaw State

    @ Nebraska

    Ohio State

    @ Rutgers

    Minnesota

    Purdue

    @ Wisconsin

    @ Illinois

    Iowa

    Penn State

    @ Ohio State

    @ Purdue

    Northwestern

    Nebraska

    @ Penn State

    Wisconsin

    @ Maryland

    @ Minnesota

    Michigan State

Hold serve at home, and win @ Nebraska, Penn State, and Minnesota, and that's 22-9 overall heading into the BTT. Trip up at home vs. anyone but Purdue, and you're still at 22-10 and right in the mix for a bid.

They really need to come out and pound these next 3 teams to get the NET trending to a respectable level.

Tampering with other teams players, is that how you want to do it. Yeah I guess most do like cheaters here, like when I brought to the board about the WHOLE offensive line laughing in my car about tutors taking tests and written papers for them. The feedback here was, well, every school does it. Bullshit, thats when I quit on this team.

So everybody's doing it but we can't.  And when they beat us, you'll come post 100 times a day here that our coaches suck and should be fired and our AD is incompetent and should be fired.  Sounds perfectly IndyKev to me.

Love you man but I wont except WHAT WE ARE. Maybe thats the issue with a few of you that think we are just bitching to bitch. You have excepted we will always finish in the middle of the Big Ten, maybe play a weekend or 2 in the big dance. Not good enough for me. So I will be here win or lose wanting better.

“The issue with a few of us” is we finished 2nd last year and we’re in 1st right now.  So you’re bitching about 2 seasons ago and what you speculate might happen this season.  That’s pretty much the definition of “bitching just to bitch.”  And the other problem is you have to shit up every damn thread with it, no matter who or what the thread was originally intended for.

Do we make enough 3's to matter? Do we shoot enough 3's to matter? Has CMW in 3 years fix either issue? This is not taxes. Even us dumb hillbillies can see the issue.

I guess we'll find out if we make enough.  Maybe if/when Johnson comes back we'll shoot and hit more.  Maybe Galloway will get his touch back.  Maybe not.  I hope we hit more and improve.  But even us dumb guys who accept mediocrity know the season is far from over.

There is a technical component to my job, although I have technical resources I rely on quite a bit. The CIO of a $30B company wants to hear technical validation from an engineer, not from me.

Basketball isn’t astrophysics or even enterprise software for that matter. So while I agree Mike Woodson knows more than I do about basketball, I don’t think that disqualifies me (or many others from questioning him).

And even if it did, I don’t have to question him based on what I think, I can question him based on what other leaders in his field do. “Hey you’re doing stuff a lot different than Tommy Lloyd and it isn’t working out great so far, tell me about that?” is a completely valid question, yeah?

I do get questioned on why I do what I do in my job and my performance. Most people do, right? I use hard (analytics) and soft examples to self assess and to justify my performance to people. Sure I don’t have the press to deal with, but even going beyond that it isn’t like Scott Dolson is anymore qualified to question Mike Woodson on X and Os than @BGleasis.

My ability to have a conversation about physics with Albert Einstein is significantly more lacking than my ability to have a conversation with Mike Woodson about basketball. There are tons of people on this board that have a very good understanding and knowledge of the game.

I work in a field (taxes) that people bitch about more than this board bitches about Mike Woodson, three point shooting, recruiting, and the brand of our uniforms combined.  A lot of people think they know a lot about taxes.  They don’t.  And there are many, many subjects one could unfortunately say that about, most of which are much less complex than physics.
