So personally I think the more guys we can get back from the portal the better. It also tells me the current staff thinks they can contribute to turning this around and that the player is buying in. Both are pluses. 3

When Coach Cignetti gets this thing turned around and hopefully get to a bowl next year, that sort of stuff will definitely trending up.

A bowl next year would be great, but let’s give CCC a few seasons to turn the ship around; it could get worse before it gets better.

Are we still ahead of the University of Chicago?

IU Scott
Has anyone heard the plans from some of JMU defensive players if they will look at IU. I know they had one DL with 15 sacks and another one with 10. Also had a LB that led the conference in tackles.

The guy with 15 may have eligibility left, but I can’t tell. They also have a sophomore DL who had 7.5 sacks. The LB that led them in tackles is also a sophomore. I’d guess at this point any of their guys who haven’t entered the portal are planning on playing in the bowl game. We could see some of them enter the portal after that. They definitely have some interesting guys on defense. Edited December 15, 2023 by Kdug

Hoosierfan1901
Dude is massive like 6’7 320ish from Wisconsin. Started in like 8 games last year and was mainly a rotational player this season. He was also a former #1 in Wisconsin and top 10 OL in his recruiting class 6

No? I think we will be better; however, it’s a massive change, and CCC has a much different style. Just trying to keep expectations in check because it could take a few years before we see a really good team.

You would think so. His length is a lot to kick inside. I used to watch all the coach press conferences when I was doing cardio. They are on YouTube. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment but honestly it was the best way to get insight into how the coaches evaluate players. Sometimes it’s what they don’t say that’s telling. IMO scheme fit is huge on OL play. Some teams want want to stretch laterally and you need guys with some foot quickness to move. Some teams want big guys who bulldoze. I don’t know which way we are going but I think we are overhauling by design. Last summer we had guys like Bedford, Sales, and Benson coming back. I was optimistic about them. Yet Bostad kept complaining. I never heard him compliment them once on his own. Maybe a reporter would ask specifically and he’d say something tepid but it seemed obvious he didn’t have “his guys.” Now, by contrast, he was very effusive in praise for Carter Smith. He also loved Katic. Austin Barrett, a true freshman, garnered a ton of praise. Honestly I hate to be harsh. But we couldn’t get one yard in short yardage and it was costing us at critical times. Notice who is coming back and who isn’t. Behind the scenes you are seeing prioritization IMO. Just my long way of saying I’m not surprised the line is being overhauled and hopefully we get guys who fit and can get us the yardage we need both in the run game and pass pro. Ho hum--- another "highly ranked" kid that didn't work out for CTA. I feel like more often than not our four stars fizzled yet guys like McFadden, who was a high 2 star/low 3 star, excelled. We could go through our list of four and five stars (Jeremy Finch from way back for those who remember) even before Allen and they have fizzled more often than not. IMO a kids’ makeup is huge especially in footballl. There are too many tough kids who will work that will blow by the kid who isn’t all in. I think the new staff will prioritize the kids’ makeup and player development. That’s part of what he’s saying when he emphasizes he doesn’t care how many stars a kid has. Sweet spot is player evaluation, getting good players, but also kids who love football, get it, and are fully committed. Looks to me off initial impressions that our assistants will be a huge upgrade. Huge. Edited December 17, 2023 by BobSaccamanno
