Peloton subscription is that much?!?!

Edit: Oh, misread...the BIKE is that much...how much is the subscription?

After my open heart surgery in August I dropped 35 pounds and have kept it off. No pop, sugar, fried foods, very limited sweets and very little salt plus I eat much smaller portions. If I have steak or burgers I weight out 4 ounce portions and I eat plenty of veggies.  I do a programmed workout 6 days per week on the treadmill with elevations from 4 through 10 and speeds of 4-5 miles per hour. I am doing 3 miles in about 42 minutes.

I am almost 68 years old,  6'2 and my before surgery weight was 254. My goal is 215.. I look and feel so much better with the weight gone and I can wear clothes that I wore back in 2010.

Best of luck to everyone. As you get older getting rid of weight and keeping it off is so hard.

Outstanding!! No doubt with that effort and attention you will get to your goal!

Been on both. Like Christian Healthcare Ministries a lot better. $450/month and per event out of pocket of $500.  Medishare is higher and has larger deductibles in my experience.

I just switched from Liberty to MediShare Lower deductible plan) on Feb 1. We will see how it goes. Liberty raised their prices and I was tired of their super slow claims processing.

My neighbor is a big iFit guy and brags about how he talks and meets with their instructors.  I got a bike for Christmas and after looking at Peloton and Echelon (and almost pulling the plug on the pre Christmas deal) I ended up with a $250 Cyclace. Couldn't be happier. I watch Virtual trail running for scenery. One day I'm on Miami Beach, the next in the Canary Islands. My initial thought was to eventually get an iFit subscription once I had the rust off and could go for longer workouts. Now, I'm not so sure.  A couple more months and I'll be outside regularly.

I've got to up my workouts and cut down my meal portions as I want to lose 10lbs. I've never been so heavy. Too much good eating (and beer) and not enough activity. The beer is non negotiable so I have to adjust elsewhere.

This sounds exactly like me - I’ll adjust whatever I need to if it means keeping cocktail hour or a couple of evening beers.

Personally, I prefer biking outdoors over the Peloton, but usually when I’m biking outdoors it’s to get somewhere or just have fun. The Peloton is the pain and sweat cave.

I do like those scenic rides too occasionally. Peloton has a whole series from places all over the world.

I enjoy getting out on my bike and riding down here in Florida when I get the freedom so I have no interest in Peloton...and only need my wife's mother sharp tongue for motivation when she inevitably comes over for Sunday diners and takes veiled shots at my weight (even now after I lost significant weight) so paying someone to yell at me seems a little wasteful. That said for those that can't stomach the 2000-2400 plus monthly subscription charges on top....if you insist that you need Pelotons drill sargeants then you can always just subscribe without the equipment and use your own exercise bike and equipment and cast it from their app on the tv/phone etc. I mean there are a ton of free options out there as well so no matter what price point you are at I guess I'm saying there isn't a legitimate price excuse...we all have tons of motivational/situational excuses enough but that money one you can work around if you want.

I still subscribe to making changes to what goes into your body above all else. It is very hard but is the best way to see a big difference. Is it easier to bike for a half hour to hour or simply not eat that bag of Doritos? I don't have time to jump on a bike every time I want to eat something unhealthy so I just don't eat the bad stuff. People underestimate how much they eat and all the little add on things in their salads etc but closely monitoring and limiting your consumption I still think is more bang for your buck and time than anything else. Not only that but those that aren't in shape enough or healthy (not in pain etc) to exercise at the rate required to really burn enough calories etc to make much a difference....so start with your diet if you are really serious. If you can motivate yourself to exercise then you have the will power to monitor your diet as well.

Besides...when you eat well you start to FEEL much better. When you feel better then you sleep better and feel like getting up and moving around. In my experience...starting there is what gives you the energy to get out and be active....and also will take the extra weight off your joints etc and allow you to play pickleball, ride your bike, and go for that jog. I lost weight and suddenly my back and knees stopped hurting as much and then I didn't end laid up for days after exercising waiting for the inflamation to go down to exercise again. It's not that exercise is bad if you are overweight but for those that want to lose weight it is almost assuredly not going to be enough on it's own...so don't be afraid to just start with what you are eating and drinking and seeing if you can't have results there (especially in winter when you say you can't get out and exercise) and then as you feel better and improve your health you can work on adding more and more activity. Oh...and drink LOTS and LOTS of water....almost nobody is drinking enough. Your body loves it and will love you for it...and you may find you eat less when you do drink it. No matter what you choose to do just go for it! I approach it in a competitive way...try to challenge myself...I don't focus every day on the scale but rather on pant size/shirt size and how I'm feeling and how my BP is etc. Good luck!

I have been trim most of my life but recently ballooned over 200 lbs.  At my age it is harder to lose weight.  In six weeks I have lost 10 pounds but it's leveling off a little.  Watching what I eat and getting on the Peloton.  Let's see what I can get done.

I told my wife I wanted to get to 170.  She said (a) she didn't want me that skinny and (b) it's not realistic anyway.  LOL

I agree with HoosierFaithful.  In my experience, my weight total is mostly about eating, but of course you'd like to be in shape so exercise is still important.

I had an epiphany the other day: I love sandwiches.  I could eat 'em breakfast, lunch, dinner.  Deli meat and cheese makes for a delicious meal BUT isn't nutritionally the best, unfortunately.  My dreams were dashed.

I asked my nutritionist wife-to-be if a sandwich with absolutely delicious french bread (or whatever equivalent you choose) and then hummus, veggies, and greens would still be nutritious (as opposed to some flavorless cardboard nutrigrain bread or whatever).  The verdict: the bread ain't great, but the veggies and greens more than make up for it.

I've been eating veggie sandwiches on take-and-bake french bread from Kroger for three weeks and it's effing incredible. Boar's Head has a sweet garlic hummus that is YOWZA good as flavor too.

I also love sandwiches.

If I may make a suggestion, I recommend tearing the bread out from the middle. You won't miss it, and more room for the good stuff. The bread is just a vessel for getting food to the face.

I have had some sandwiches where the lettuce is used as the outside vessel as you dubbed it.  It worked for me.

There are some pizza crusts or rice that are made with cauliflower too.  I haven't tried the crust yet but I heard its not bad.

I have done both of these and they are both solid options. This is what I do often when I am not watching my carbs as closely. My wife makes homemade buns/bread and I do this all the time...just "scoop out" the excess. It comes out nice and easy and often times the crusty exterior on fresh baked bread is the best part.

I have been limiting my carbs lately so I have been using lettuce as a "bun" for burgers, etc. Not as good as really good fresh baked bread obviously, but it does the job and is a healthy alternative. You can make wraps with it as well.

Cauliflower crust is pretty good in my experience.  Just ask for it to be cooked a couple extra minutes.

Mix some shredded cheese with an egg, to make you a pizza crust. Spread it over some parchment paper and place under the broiler for a few minutes. Add you normal meat veggie pizza toppings and recook. It's freaking awesome.

This is one of my favorite low carb meals....you'd be surprised how good this turns out!! It was a game changer because pizza was a big deal for me in my diet. If you check the cauliflower crust ones do ok but still don't knock down the carbs as much as I'd like when doing my diet. I think my wife got the recipe off pinetrest....lot's of good options there.

For hamburgers I do use Sola Hamburger buns. (sell it and bread at walmart) I just butter and toast them to help "flavor" them up a bit....as when I make my burgers they are extra juicy (on the rare side) and I need something to hold that all in a bit. The bread is better than most keto bread...not awful..not as good as normal bread by any means though. Can't stand the hotdog buns though. For most deli sandwiches I just use lettuce wrap/they even have cheese wraps/or I'll use a low carb tortilla. Not going to eliminate every carb...just cut out the really bad ones and save the other carbs for when you really can't avoid them and then try to moderate them.

This is kind of where I'm at. I haven't cut carbs out completely but just do in moderation because I need some of the juice for my workouts.

Kroger also sells carb free bread. Little pricey but to me it's worth it. Lots of peanuts, cheeses, and stuff like that in the house for the munchies you experience and we always will have hard boiled eggs in fridge so anytime you get a food craving pop one in and it's gone.

Good luck to everyone starting their new diets and to everyone continuing on good luck as well. Diets to me is like that old Mark Twain phrase...it's easy to quit smoking I've done it a thousand times! Diets are easy to start but so hard (especially in cold months) to maintain. Good luck all!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hope everyone is getting their steps in and trying to eat healthy! Stretches of warm weather make it easier to get outside and be active. Keep it going if you already have and if you haven't started pick a day and get it going.

I've yet to meet a person who does life worse when they are healthier/fit/in shape,etc...

Exactly, just steps alone can be huge. We went into Manhattan today via the sub. Had breakfast, walked to a bookstore, then did some shopping. Got home and decided to have some drinks on the terrace - it’s 54 here today! Checked my watch and it said 5.17 miles of walking and 11 flights of stairs.

That sounds like a great day! Just getting steps is the key. With heavy rain in our forecast tomorrow and potential for snow on Thursday I took full advantage of our low 60's in Indy today.

I used to be full on marathon/running guy but all I do now is walking. Try to keep a good pace. Went a little crazy today...I'm at 10.2 miles. With IU game I should have no problem adding a couple more miles while pacing.

Keep up the great work!

Ha, yes another 1.5 or 2 miles with the pacing during the game. It all adds up!

Steps are definitely the key and consistency helps. I noticed once we started WFH that I gained a little bit of weight, since I wasn’t walking as much to the sub here and at work. Losing that automatic 45 minutes of walking M-F was a big loss to my fitness.

Just graduated from a walker to a cane. Two weeks out from surgery and feel pretty good about that. I am getting steps in, little bits at a time. Fatigue still an issue. Got a platform to convert my hybrid bike to a stationary bike, just waiting for my son to set it up. Can’t wait to get on it.

Believe it or not, I have actually lost some weight since surgery. Attribute that to the pain meds as I haven’t been real hungry
