Coach Mike Woodson Megathread

As much as I want it to be true, no way Dolson actually has the guts to can Woodson after 1 bad year. I’d argue it’s obviously still warranted based on the performance this year and middling success with 2 NBA players last year and the bevy of recurring problems. We clearly are directionless, it’s time, but I just can’t see Dolson doing it. Hope to be wrong.

It isn't just about this terrible year or the record.

Style of play

Getting blown out multiple times

Unable to change your ways

His recruiting philosophy

First year was mediocre at best

Second year was good but gets blown out in the 2nd round.

Just depends on the all important echo chamber....but in logic world not showing up for a game has literally zero impact unless of course this board has turned into 1988 world.

Totally disagree especially with today's kids, they want to feel.tbe love. If no other coaches showed up then no one would care but three other coaches did show up

Nope! But Painter knows that the IU social media crowd will get ticked so he's taking full advantage of it. It's an easy play by him but at the end of the day it actually means nothing.

Sorry, but that’s just satire, right? Painter went to see prospective recruits just to troll IU fans on social media?

So Painter was just lost and wandered into a gym during sectionals?

Purdue doesn't have phones or or zoom that a fine University like IU has. They can't make that late night call like Woody.

Say you haven’t followed recruiting without saying you haven’t followed recruiting. 😂

Holy cripes I’ve never heard anything like this before from an avid fan of college anything about recruiting and attending important HS games.

So Painter went to the game just to troll IU? Like you think he took time away from his team competing for a national title and the only real benefit was trolling IU?

Again, prepare on him returning. We are being conditioned for the news or in this case, non news.

We probably have the worst boosters of any so called blue blood program. There is just no desire to be great or to do whatever it takes to get the program great again.

The last two hires in particular tell you how pathetic they are.

Trilly shared an update that Dolson and Woodson met today and that no decision about the future has been made yet. I took this as Dolson giving Woodson an opportunity to show something the rest of the year but that’s just me.

Hopefully we lose out so there is some chance he is sent packing.

But....everyone sure is free to dissect it. For example let's say this. Hey Trent. We love you to death and good luck. We won't be there tonight but sure do wish you well. Reply...Thanks Coach. Talk soon!

Or, he could take the Tom Crean approach and send a text that says something like "I have been thinking about you a lot since last weekend.  A whole lot."   :coffee:

If Woodson comes back, and we stink next year, I hope people let Quinn Buckner know about it at every opportunity. Dolson doesn't deserve it because I'm sure he's opposed to it. Woodson doesn't even deserve it because you can't blame a guy for taking or wanting to keep that Job even though he's mediocre at it.

But Quinn. Quinn is pushing this for reasons unrelated to basketball.

Nah. If Woodsons fate depends on the last three remaining games then he wasn’t really in any jeopardy of being canned to begin with.

Dolson is no dummy. The negative effects would kill the program the minute we started losing games.

Woodson is out.

Yeah, even if this meeting (and others) happened it's just getting ducks in a row. It's a necessary part of the process, and theoretically Dolson should be meeting with all his coaches on a regular basis anyway.

Do y'all not have 1:1 meetings with your boss once a week? This is normal.

I heard Woodson called the meeting to find out what’s going on because he read that Trilly tweet about Pearl. 😎

Maybe, but I’m not so sure. What wasn’t shared is who called the meeting. Dolson has no reason to call this meeting; Woodson is the coach, and according to his contract, will be the coach. Why call a meeting to tell your coach you’re not sure what the future holds? If Dolson did call the meeting, I think it’s either to fulfill some legal or other obligation, like others have said, maybe a monthly/regular meeting. Perhaps Woodson called the meeting because he needed to hear (or report?) that he’s still the coach, and no decision has been made.

That’s just my guess. This whole situation has taken over my free time admittedly 😆; I really don’t think about university meetings much otherwise! Haha

Maybe the meeting was to find out why not one coach was out recruiting last night. or the name of the wine Woody drank last night.

I take it that if Dolson gets his guy, then Woody’s out. If he can’t, then Woody is retained. Just depends which way that domino falls.

For my own sake I’d love to hear what you’ve heard that makes May different. I’m fine with May but Miller is in the back of my mind because there were good reasons to believe he’d pan out. I was on the Archie train but NEVER was the Crean. I was shouting from the roof tops what Crean wouod ultimately become and he did just that.

Archie wasn’t a unanimous favorite when he was hired either. Though a lot of ppl wanted him. I remember debating ppl on here and elsewhere that Archie isn’t in my top 5 candidates. His offensive system was bad imo. Slow and low scoring, reminding me of Bennett in a way but not as bad. And his defense gave up the 3 a lot. As we see still that doesn’t work in the modern game. I rooted for Archie to do well but he was in over his head and you could tell by his body language at his announcement. And then they got torched by Ft Wayne.

May is different bc he can coach offense and putting the ball in the hoop is the hardest thing to do. The big question about May, is his defense. I think he has to bring a defensive specialist in to help him grow in that area to be successful at IU. If not he will end up being some version of Fran McCaffery at Iowa. Minus the explosive personality that we all laugh at Fran for.

It’s not uncommon for AD’s to call a meeting to tell a coach they aren’t meeting expectations so they can try and adjust. It’s no different than getting called in by a boss in any other industry.

So I'm not one that thinks we should hire May and I think the version of Fran at Iowa is a good comp, but isn't Fran at Iowa with IU resources Tom Crean?

So if may could find a bit more consistency than Crean that would likely be a really good tenure, yeah?
