The offense was an issue, and the bigger issue.  I agree with you there.  But you are dismissing a big issue they had on defense.  This is exactly how Woody saw it, and I agree with him.  Even with the scoring droughts, if they had a defensive stopper, they still win some more games.  It wasn't just bad, it was basically helpless down the stretch in some key games.  Yes, some good dynamic players beat them, but we put up zero resistance on top wing players who could go get shots on their own.  You can't have that at this level.

I would have loved to get Dennis but we just don't have a scholly for him, so it is moot.

The question is will some of our guys get waaay better to put this behind them.  I sure hope so, but I am concerned.  I like your point about Schifino and X on perimeter D, but that 3 spot on D is still a hole.

If he saw it as a bigger issue, there wouldn’t have been kids back. If this kid was somehow better at offense then we wouldn’t have been competing against Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Clemson and K state. Every computer stats suggests we are worse with him. He hasn’t proven Jack offensively and his defense isn’t a need. I completely disagree.  The little effect he will have doesn’t offset the load of crap he has been offensively for the past four seasons.  Anything you think you get from him offensively is hope.

    1. He's not a terrible offensive player. He isn't great but he's okay in that aspect.

    2. He's a larger lockdown defender than we had last season. So he would solve a problem we had last year.

It's all moot. According to the other site and Rabjohns it won't be IU that he chooses today.

He isn’t okay. His PER over his career is horrible. His PER is below average for a guard. He did that in a two bid conference. His stats against tourney teams is horrible as well.

I absolutely agree.  Listen to Woody's post season ending presser.  He said a need was wing defense (along with shooting).  I am sure he positively wanted Dennis but we didn't have a roster spot in the end.

We need the likes of Galloway and Scoop to get better there.

If we could have defended the wing with any semblance of resistance in a few games, we could have easily won 3-4 more games, which is all the difference in the world.  It was the difference in between winning and losing games and our staff understands that.

If i had a concern for next year, this would be near the top in terms of lowering our ceiling.  It doesn't matter what our overall rankings were defensively; this issue was a direct cause and effect on some key games we lost.

Indiana problem last year because of its offense. We want to pick and choose last year on a couple wins, look at the crap offense. Don’t be in the bottom six in points per game in conference, don’t be in the bottom half in assists in the conference, don’t be the worst free throw shooting team, don’t be 10th in 3 point shooting, don’t be 95th in Kenpom, etc….

Indiana was the best defense in the Big Ten. It improves its crappy offense it wins a ton of conference games.

It has plenty of options at the wing from Bates, Galloway, JHS, etc to fill in defense.  I will bet that Indiana is a top 10-15 defense next year without Dennis.  What will it be on offense? That will determine IU next year. Dennis ain’t fixing that. We need Bates, JHS, etc to improve and get us better.

Dennis absolutely makes this team better. He has elements to his game that we don't have.

Standing around too much is a result of not having enough ball handlers, and will be rectified this year. They have already mentioned playing with better pace, Dennis would help that. It certainly doesn't seem like a "huge" question mark though, just a natural adjustment that needs to occur now that we are more skilled and can execute that type of offense.

He is a horrific offensive player. D we have TJD still. Let’s be real. He isn’t going anywhere. We have a better backup in Reneau.  Defensively we are set to clean up mistakes. We have Plenty of athletes to guard the wings. Dennis wasn’t solving the issues we had last year. 90+ Offensive team isn’t doing crap and Dennis ain’t improving that.

Not going to Indiana. If Trayce goes pro we get no one from portal.Too late in the game for any impact player.Team is set for next year.No defensive stopper on team will be the weakness next year.Could still be a better team.

Last years team was top 25 with Parker Stewart and Miller Kopp on the wings. We have plenty of athleticism on this team to be top 15/20.  The only problem this team that is a huge question mark is standing around too much on offense and shooting.  O was in the 90s last year…..wasn’t good.  Dennis wasn’t making this team better.

Thank you! I am an old fuddy duddy!! (ARCHAIC) I liked the way it WAS! If not for the colleges who would even know these young adults! IU scholly gives them A LIFE TIME OF OPPORTUNITY! So I guess when my or your or any others child was not gifted enough to play sports we are taking advantage. Sorry like when BEING A IU MBB WAS ENOUGH!.

Dude the universities and NCAA have taken advantage of kids for way too long under the guise of amateurism. It’s a fact. Money being allocated to the school is now being allocated to students who play a game they love.  It’s fair.  I am sorry that you like to take advantage of people for no reason.

You are so far off with this post it is ridiculous.

Not really. Who would tolerate this in any environment? It’s old and downright dumb for kids to be taken advantage of.  Only athletes in schools are held to a certain standard while being taken to the bank by their colleges and the NCAA.

Or crazy thought for some. Others just have a difference of opinion on what they want college sports to look like. There are some people that understand kids have a choice (don’t have to go to college) and would prefer the beauties of amateurism remain as they are. I do find it funny that these kids get four to five years of life for free and “some” of you think that’s nothing. I was a college athlete and worked in athletic academic advising for a few years as well, so I’ve seen what these kids get vs the regular student. It’s a head start in life essentially (damn good deal). With that said, I respect the opposite view and understand it’s here anyway, so might as well make the most of it. But you think a different view means we’re okay with others being taken advantage of? I just told you why they aren’t taken advantage of from my opinion. So don’t be ridiculous.

Amateurism doesn’t exist when a bunch of old institutions make a ton of money off of you.

The NIL SUCKS! The NCAA is at the blame!! Don't give the kids ( young adults ) any money for using them! Let MY COLLEGE SPORTS ALL GO! I don't like what has  BECOME OF MY FAVORITES SPORTS! But it is what I will  personally quit watching!!  I liked the IU non pro players! In my mind1 time paid you are a PRO! Just my own little rant from close to a 70 yr. old man! Go  IU out bid with CASH instead of Fan base and such! Sorry for rant! But to me it is the same as OLIMPIC SPORTS! I don't watch!

No you are archaic and are OK with taking advantage of people. These athletes provide a lot of money to the schools and NCAA. They should get something in return other than an education. It’s archaic thoughts and let’s not change things because that wasn’t the way in my times that don’t progress us as a society.

Agree, but it doesn't really matter. It's not our money and there isn't an NIL cap per school or anything. So it doesn't really matter if DD gets $10K or $900K.

I get it but I wouldn’t pay him a lot.  Just not worth it.  If he can get more some other place good for him.  I would actually prefer that because he doesn’t move the needle on offense like we need to significantly improve.

Woodson wants DD and if someone has to go that'll be Woodson's decision if things play out that way. Things have to shake out that way though and there's still 2 different decisions that need to be made in DD and TJD. Woodson has made it clear to people he wants DD because he doesn't feel they have a guy on the team that can guard elite wings and he thinks DD can. I think DD will go somewhere else though since it's looking more and more like he wants some $$$$ for his services. I get all kids do but things are getting a little crazy after the Pack commitment.

He isn’t even remotely worth that much. He is a role player. It will be interesting but I would pass.

My take: If JG does not really improve his game, he is not a starter on an elite team. If he does improve his game - namely handles - he can play heavy minutes at the three.

Most of why we all want JG on the court next year is we assume that he is already working on his game and will make an equal or greater jump in skillset this offseason.

    My dad’s favorite phrase:

”You know what happens when you assume?”

I agree 100%. But are we going to have the luxury of having Trayce down low on defense?

I want a shooter too. Absolutely fills a void. But if it's another Miller Kopp, are we solving anything? I don't know. Maybe

I think we will.  He isn’t looking like he will be drafted where he said he would stay. Gives Reneau some time.

i would LOVE this.  if TJD comes back and JG doesn't leave and we roll with what we currently have!?  sign me up!  i just have to b skeptical that TJD and JG both come back with Reneau too.

Everyone should be skeptical but as it looks he won’t be drafted in first and early second so coming back might be his best option.

We say that until the hole in the defense is gaping. So many times last year we watched Kopp and Stewart's guy drive right around them through the lane only to put Trayce and Race in a predicament.

I agree with you 1000%. Shooters are absolutely needed. But he's essentially the same player as Kopp. And if we really reaching our potential, Kopp is coming off the bench.

If McNeil can hold his own defensively and shoot it at a high clip, then absolutely. He fills a bigger need.

Indiana was ranked 24th on D with Kopp and Stewart playing 25 minutes per game. It’s not as needed as a shooter.  Dennis was horrible offensively with a PER of 12.9 during his time at WSU.  He doesn’t solve our horrendous shooting and our 95th ranked offense. Indiana has an issue here with lacking shooters and two bigs who have not proven to be able to shoot the ball as well.  It makes us easier to guard when we just dump it down because teams can leave players alone.

I saw a small clip of JJ Redick talking about how some people complain that there is no defense in the NBA and that its not because players arent trying in the NBA but there is SOOOO much better spacing. He also added that the college game hasnt evolved at all. Teams (not just Duke) are still running the same stuff they did when he was there.

So ill agree shooting isnt the only way to score, but we need that skill upgraded accross the board to give our work horses room to do what they do best.

He isn’t wrong and it’s why shooting is a necessity in college. Teams can pack it in, etc. I don’t understand a high volume 3 pt shooter who can’t hit them. IU as of the way it looks and unless someone significantly improves could potentially be a worse shooting team than this year.
