I thought we let him sit too long. McCullar had four fouls and he played through it, and was huge down the stretch. I understand he's a lot more experienced, but it didn't have to be that big of a difference either.

Agreed. The tides began to shift the moment Mgbako picked up his 4th. I don’t think Woodson put him back in until under 4.

McCullar is a 5th year senior and MM is a freshman so it is easier to trust him

I thought the game was lost by not attacking McCullar more, especially once he picked up his 4th. He played with 4 for 8 or 10 minutes it felt like. Get him out, and IU wins.

I was yelling at the TV for him earlier than we got him for sure. We needed his scoring threat as the lead was going away.

With 11:05 to go, we were 5-9 from 3...

We finished 6-15 not counting Gabe's heave at the end...

Down the stretch we went away from our strength (inside) and took ill-advised 3 pointers... Reneau, Banks, Galloway...

So you know what "modern basketball" got us today?

Beat... That's what...

Why are you picking this fight man? Most of the threes after that point were heaves late in the shot clock because we tried to force it inside and we shot miserably from two the second half.

Frustratingly close. Played about 32 great minutes. Would really like to build on some things from that game and continue to refine things.

  • Great game from Trey, his best as a Hoosier IMO. His stretch the last four minutes to end the first half and then obviously in the second half were huge.
  • MM had what I thought was his best game as a Hoosier, I wish he'd have had the chance to play through foul trouble more at the end of the first and not sat so long in the second.
  • Ware was phenomenal - his defense on Dickinson was great most of the game.
  • When things tightened up in the second half I felt like we went back to some bad tendencies - we did a really good job when we had a 13 point lead of shooting a little more threes and seemed to go away from that. I am sure MM being on the bench was a factor there
  • Even with the two late desperation threes, we averaged better points per shot in the second from three than we did two. Late in the game Ware and Reneau both got left wide open at the top of the key for three and neither even looked at the basket - I'd like to see that change.
  • That late overturn on the OOB was huge and I didn't think it was a good call. Who knows if we win, but it's a hell of a lot easier if you're down 2 with the ball instead of down 4.
  • KJ Adams is everything I think a lot of wish Geronimo had been. Incredible athlete and motor, and knows what he is and isn't capable of.

We've got a few cupcakes coming up, would really like to see us build on this performance heading into January.

KJ AdAms is what I hope Banks becomes…. But I’m losing faith in that development. The “athletic 4 man” is so hard to get right. IU just hasn’t been able to develop a forward like that since OG. Geronimo, Banks, Forester, could argue Justin Smith,

Man that was disappointing. Had it there for the taking. Micro view....just turnovers at the wrong times, missed free throws and yes I'll go there officiating. Mgbako was standing straight up on two of them. Malik called twice on same. Also really happy the way Ware dominated HD in first half defensively.

Macro view. I think Kansas is a veteran team that toughed it out and won. If they are the #2 team in the country (which I think they are) we should be really happy despite the L given how the game played, Cupps as a true freshman playing QB, foul trouble, and of course down Xavier. Lots to build on here.

My biggest complaint today? That we just didn't win and sometimes you have to tip the cap to the basketball Gods of made shots, bad calls, turnovers or whatever.

I’m pleased with the effort, especially Trey.

He took the kill shot and missed. I’m ok with that.
Can’t “blame the refs”, but IU is not a big dog anymore and the refs seem partial to the higher ranked team these days. Certainly it can no longer be called the “Hall of Calls” anymore.

One of the better coaching jobs by CMW, especially with the subs.

There were at least 3 steals that should have been fast breaks, but were turnovers instead.

Of all the Hoosiers, I did think Banks made a lot of bone headed plays and hurt the over all team- I lost my cool when he took a 3.

I would like to see MR pass sometimes when he gets too deep.
Teams seemed to play jittery sometimes and the ball was like a hot potato- Ware’s missed rebound at the end that was reviewed was the death knell.

That’s exactly right, across the board.  I don’t think this loss hurts you.  Hopefully you build on it.

Regarding KU, they held a lot on cuts etc and it wasn’t called.  Yet they called it inconsistently the other way.   Very strange thought process from the officials.  And every benefit of the doubt went their way.  You can talk about momentum in the game but you can sometimes see the refereeing momentum  too where they default play by play to a team if in doubt or 50/50.  Here the refs defaulted toward KU.  You could feel it and sense it.  It’s totally disingenuous to pretend that’s not a real thing.

It is super annoying, but as a team, say what we all want, but our focus will address our lack of plays on both ends late.  Missed shots.  Couldn’t get stops.  Couldn’t secure the ball on rebounds or loose balls.  All came into play.  Weren’t good enough.

I think Galloway Cupp Mgbako(??) McNeeley, Reneau starting 5 next year could be awesome…. Buttt we have got to upgrade the entire bench. I think if Banks and Gunn don’t improve over the course of the rest of the season I think they might need to find a new home. We need guards…. We need guards badly. I think Iu should go all in after the Queen recruitment on only guards in the portal.

100%.  I think we are getting at least 4-5 more guys.  Names TBD.  Maybe a freshman or two. 2-3 transfers.   We will have as many spots as the staff wants.  See Geronimo and Bates.  In the portal era, anyone can go.  I won’t name anyone specifically but we could easily create six spots.  XJ, Walker and the open spot.  Ware may go pro.  That’s four.  Easily can pick up two more spots; everyone knows who is vulnerable and we know what Woody could choose to do to find other spots.

What’s this argument over “modern” basketball anyway?

Is the three point shot utilization now being considered modern basketball? Surely not.

The three point shot was first used in professional basketball in 1961 (ABL), 1979 (NBA) and 1986 (NCAA).

Kansas has played winning basketball it seems like forever ago. Do they play modern basketball? They beat us today.

I think the game today should show that we need to be able to play strong at the guard and shooting forward positions. That includes three ball and slashing.

We have the interior covered very well with Malik and Ware. After the years is over, it would be interesting in viewing a broke down efficiency chart on both ends of the floor, comparing last years combo of Trace & Race vs this years Reneau & Ware.

Guard play is down and I’m sure we don’t want to dig into any type of comparison there.

There was another possession when I think we were still up 3 or 5. McCullars had to take an off balance 3 in the corner due to the shot clock. The ball hit the floor but couldn't get hold of the ball and a jump ball was called. Than they all.ost turned the ball over when the ball hits banks when McCullars was falling but it went out of bounds. They ended up scoring on that possession.

I know in this era it won't happen but it would be great to keep our main starters together. This team needs to be able to grow together but it won't happen.
