Annoying Aging and Health Issues

So, had a hell of a week health-wise. Tuesday night as I was falling asleep I had this weird lightning flash across my vision several times. The next morning on my way to the sub, I kept having these weird flashes in the outside corner of my right eye. They kind of got worse as the morning went on, until I consulted Dr. Google. Online it said, “get thee to an eye doctor stat if you have flashing in your eye.”

I was already at work, so I called the Eye Center about 11 blocks north and they said to come in immediately. Went in and they did a crazy amount of tests and took pictures of the back of my eye. There was so much blood in the back of my eye that they couldn’t get a clear picture, but they thought it could be a retinal tear or detachment. They told me to monitor and let them know if it worsened. And to come back the next day if it did.

Woke up the next morning to do alternate side parking and I had these really large undulating black snakes in my vision and a gauzy veil over half of my right eye. After taking care of parking, I called my boss (an internist) to tell her what was going on and she said to immediately go to our ER. So, hightailed it on the sub to Manhattan. Spent ALL day in the ER getting tests. They finally were able to take a picture of the back of my eye that showed a retinal tear.

Got it operated on this morning with chryo gas  to seal the tear and they are hoping I will regain my vision in that eye.

Went from thinking I was going to go blind, to now hoping things will go back to normal. When I was worrying about learning braille and considering books on tape, I kept thinking, “Thank the lord for Don Fisher.” 🤠

Dang man.  Speedy recovery to you.

You already watched the game. I was gonna tell you no jumping up and down when you watch it!

And there was plenty to jump up and down about!

I smoked a bowl first. Made me nice and mellow for the game. I think there may have been some fist pumping when JHS hit like a bazillion threes in a row though.

This eyeball talk reminded me of something a friend told me once when we used too much bleach mopping the floor.

"The eyes are the nuts of the face!"

Oh man, that is SOOO true. I can’t imagine anything more cringe inducing than eyeball isssues - except for ball ball issues. :)

Dang man. That sounds scary.

Best wishes, get well and keep us update.  🙏👍

If all goes well, recovery of vision in that eye after about 3-4 months. Just got back from retinal specialist. Still working on spatial stuff - equilibrium is all wonky. Bumped into the wall a couple times on my way in to Manhattan, but didn’t knock anyone over or anything!

Seriously praying for you brother! However know this, if things go seriously wonky your mind will adapt! Like I said I have a seriously lazy eye. Had it all my life. If my mind didn’t choose to ignore my right eye, I would have had double vision my whole life. Which means my whole life has been in 2D. My brain manages 3D based on relativity so to speak. A brain learned ability. Hasn’t stopped me, I think in actuality during my career it helped me. Looking at CAD files on the computer screen, everyone else was seeing 2D. I was seeing 3D like my brain had taught me!

Yeah, I think our minds are pretty good at adapting to things like that. The retinal specialist said it will take awhile, but the brain adapts.

Glad to hear you are doing better. As I read this, I started thinking that you worked on a submarine and had a crazy vision of a yellow submarine flying an IU flag!

Ha, I was a Copsman in the Navy and had to go onto a submarine one time - to take a sailor off who we were admitting to the psych ward. I recall thinking, “I could never live on one of these!”

Now, I have “Yellow Submarine” in my head…

Used to work with a guy that served in the Coast Guard. He said if you think submarine quarters are small, you should serve on a cutter!

I went inside U-505 at the museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.  Also went on JFKs air force one at the air force museum in Dayton.

I stay out of anything shaped like a tube.
